CANON PATERSON COOPERATIVE:
3 Artists
Located
in the Inner City District of Mbare, this is a favorite destination for taxi
drivers to carry their interested tourists. Here they can watch works
being created and can also buy finished products from the large sculpture
garden and showroom. This was my first buying location 6yrs. ago and
I continue to support many artists there.
CHITUNGWEZA TOWNSHIP:
14 Artists
Zimbabwe's
3rd largest City, a high density living community about 20 km from Harare.
It may contain the highest concentration of Shona Stone Carvers in Zimbabwe.
Broken down into areas designated as Unity "A", "B", "C" ect. from the former
Colonial rulers of the Rhodesia Era, this thriving population center could
be looked upon as an artist nursery. The Art being past on from Father
to son and Experienced Artist to Apprentice.
EASTERN HIGHLANDS
REGION: 14 Artists
A lush
mountainous area bordering Mozambique that has been blessed with a geological
popourri of a large variety of stones fit for carving. Glistening black
Serpentines, richly colored Opal stone, Ropocos and the exotic and very hard
Calcite and Lepedolite are found throughout the beautiful valleys and hillsides
of this area. The cool moist climate has attracted some of the most
talented young artists I have dealt with, this coupled with the breathtaking
countryside makes it a wonderful mix of business and pleasure.
TENGENYENGE COOPERATIVE:
15 Artists
From all
around the Guruve area come Artists to display and work their craft in this
community of sculptors that number about 200 strong. Located on an old
tobacco plantation nestled in the woods, this village has the largest display
of Shona Sculpture of anywhere in the world. Where one is free to roam
down shaded paths and tree trunks become pedestals for display of a huge variety
of shapes, sizes and styles.
ZENGEZA TOWN:
6 Artists
Located
about 20 km from Harare, this high density living community is where many
of Harare's working class live and raise their families. This area where
many talented Artists have chosen as their home gives a wonderful opportunity
to visit many sources in a relatively small area.
